Harbourside Training are pleased to announce the 2008 series of training sessions for voluntary/community organisations.
All Harbourside training sessions are delivered in accordance with the RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement in Non-Accredited Learning) 5 stage process which is the Learning and Skills Council new national quality standard for non-accredited learning

First Aid– 2 Appointed Person Courses. This course is intended for smaller workplaces where the appointed person will be able to take charge in the event of an illness or accident. Topics covered: first aid regulation and the law, unconsciousness, resuscitation, severe bleeding and treatment for shock. A certificate will be issued which will last for 3 years.Cost: £25.00 per person for voluntary and charitable organisations, £45 for others. |

Awareness of Mental Health - Wednesday 7 May 2008 This is an introduction to mental illness for anyone who needs or would like a better awareness of the issues. The session will explore the most common forms of mental illness, how people's behaviour can be affected and lives impacted. After the course delegates will feel more positive about mental illness, understand what resources are out there to support people and feel more confident themselves in dealing with and supporting those living with mental distress. Safe Recruiting - Including the new ISA requirements - Tuesday 13 May 2008. Safe recruitment is essential to keep children and vulnerable adults safe and the CRB check is one of the safeguards we can put in place. In the autumn, the “ISA” system will start and all organisations who work in this area need to ensure that they are operating good recruitment practices. This training session will cover what the law requires, what is best practice and both the CRB and ISA processes. The course is intended for everyone involved in any way with the recruitment and supervision of staff, including committee members. Time 9.30 - 3.30. Personal Safety and Lone Working - Friday 16 May 2008 This course is aimed at all those who need to know how to work alone safely or who are responsible for the safety of others working alone. You will learn about: personal safety rights and responsibilities’ the 5 points of risk assessment, tips and ideas for reducing vulnerability, identifying hazards and what tools there are to help. Workshop on Chairing Meetings - Help is at hand! -
Tuesday 20 May 2008. This practical workshop is for anyone who is about to take on a role as chair or would like to be more confident or effective at chairing meetings. It is also suitable for those who may in the future take on the role. The session outlines the chair’s role throughout the process from agenda preparation, keeping the meeting to time, to controlling the meeting and participants when necessary! You will learn best practice for chairing different types of meetings and adapting to different organisations and people as well as techniques in how to involve everyone and come to consensus decisions. |

This workshop is for anyone working or volunteering in a community environment, and who is tasked with assessing the needs of that community for the development of services, future planning or fundraising. After the session you will be able to define the role of your organisation within your community and understand how to identify it’s needs. It will enable you to learn the methods used to assess what is needed and where to find the statistical evidence to back up your findings. You will also have learned how to turn those findings into outcomes such as funding and services. |

Certificated Food Hygiene Course - Thursday 22 May 2008 This course is a requirement for all those preparing, cooking or handling food. On the successful completion of this course you will be awarded the RIPH Certificate in the fundamentals of food hygiene. You will acquire all the necessary knowledge for correct food handling. The course covers: types of bacteria, food poisoning, prevention of contamination, premises and pest control, cleaning and disinfection and the law, as well as high risk foods, risk assessment and personal hygiene requirements. Working in Partnerships - Wednesday 4 June 2008 What is the role of partnerships in developing community strategies and services and how do we get the best from them? This course examines the nature and purpose of partnerships, their structure and their impact on services in the community. It will help you to define your organisation’s role, to be clear about your and the other partner’s objectives, to ensure equal representation and to enable good communication between the wider community and the partnership. This workshop is for those who are operating or about to operate within a partnership, or anyone who needs to understand more about how they work. Like all our workshops a key part of the session is group work and learning from other’s experiences. |

to Excel - Monday 9 June 2008 Spreadsheets are not just for financial people, they make life easier for those who need to keep basic accounts or who want to create graphs and bar charts from data. After this “hands on” session, you will not only be able to create spreadsheets, but also input, edit and delete numbers and text. You will learn how to sort data, mail merge, do simple formulae and create graphs/charts from your data and print as you want it to appear. This course will show you how easy it really is! |

What is the Voluntary Sector? - Workshop Thursday 12 June 2008 The voluntary and community sector is becoming more important in the delivery of services to the community. This workshop will give a thorough overview of the voluntary sector, how it works, what it does and the large scale and scope of it's activities. It will be invaluable to those who are employees, volunteers or trustees in the sector and those in the public service or private sector who work with or want to work with voluntary organisations. After the course, you will be familiar with the terminology, how the sector operates, what it does and how it interacts with others via networks and partnerships. The workshop will be participative, lively and include a mix of presentation, quizzes, group work and case studies. |

Beginners Microsoft Publisher - Monday 16 June 2008 This beginner's course is intended for those who would like to sue Publisher to produce newsletters, banners and leaflets and learn to mail merge for more effective communication., The session will be hands on and you will have the opportunity to create a leaflet or banner on the day, assisted by the trainer. This course is for paid or unpaid people in community groups/voluntary organisations. It is vital that no one feels excluded from services being provided, this course will help you to ensure that all the community you serve is represented. The session will look at barriers to participation and how to counter them. It will explore stereotyping and how and why judge people as well as legislation relating to Equal Opportunities.
