Enjoy living in Fareham Fareham is a good place to live; we hope that people enjoy life here. Speaking English and knowing how things work here will help avoid problems and help you to enjoy living here. Classes in English at Community Action Fareham include learning English and learning about England. In fact, there is information specifically about Fareham such as the location of services, businesses and leisure activities and how to access them. Community Action Fareham is a small charity. We want to help people to speak English and enjoy life in Fareham. The English classes are given to suit different abilities. Fun Classes are 8 to 12 people from a variety of countries and experiences. The approach in the classes is to make learning enjoyable and rewarding so that learners can improve their speaking, reading, listening and writing. Length of course The course is run in 3 terms of 11 weeks. The terms are similar to school terms, with a break in the middle of each term. Learners can usually improve by one level in a year. |
Times There are classes morning, afternoon and evening. However the classes are at different levels and you will benefit by attending a class at the right level for you. It is best first to speak to the tutor about your level and which classes might be suitable. Assessment Students are assessed before starting a course then again each term. Students are tested in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Your Tutor and staff Your tutor is qualified to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). The tutor is assisted in most classes by trained volunteers. Location All the classes take place at Community Action Fareham at 163 West Street, Fareham. When you can join The joining time can be flexible, as long as there is space in the class. However in general, it will be best to join classes at the beginning of terms. |
Books and resources The tutor will recommend resources and books. Exercises and hand-outs are given in classes. Homework is often given so that students can check their learning before the next class. Cost of classes The cost of the classes is £60 per term (Sept 11) with support from Hampshire Learning. Currently, EU residents, those with UK citizenship, asylum seekers and some others are eligible for this supported rate. Learners will need to bring their passport or ID to get this price. Otherwise, the full cost is £110 per term. Examinations We are working with a local college to offer examination through one of the UK examination boards. Cost of examinations The exam registration is separate and currently costs £60. This is for registration at entry and more advanced levels; this is once per year. A certificate from the examination board is given if the student is entered for the exam and passes. |

Citizenship requirements for UKBA
For some students the UKBA requirements for naturalisation / citizenship may be important. For entry-level students the requirement is to improve by at least one level in a course that uses citizenship materials. Local Information and Citizenship The classes include exercises using local information and material from NIACE that is approved for use in the UKBA approved examinations. Life in the UK test Some learners may wish to take the “Life in the UK “ test. While the course is not focused on teaching about life in the UK, using the ‘Life in the UK’ manuals enables a considerable amount of useful information to be given. Learners can always bring their manuals and get help with anything they do not understand. Those topics may be used for discussion in class. |
Getting involved in Fareham Community Action Fareham also runs the Volunteer Centre. This is a service that puts people who wish to help in our community in touch with groups that need volunteers. You can meet with the volunteer centre coordinator to discuss what you would like to do. Cultural and International Clubs There are a number of local clubs that focus on promoting and supporting other cultures. A new “International Club” is being set-up so that people can meet others and extend their cultural understanding. Support from Hampshire Learning Hampshire Learning is Hampshire County Council’s adult learning body that supports learning with grant subsidy and monitors the quality of teaching and organisation.
